The Parish History
Malcolm IV granted the Church of
Bathgate with the land which was "set out by Galfrid de
Maleville and Uchtred, the Sheriff of Linlitheu" to the monks
of Holyrood . Robert, the diocesan bishop who died about 1159,
confirmed the deed, which gave with the church about seventy acres
of land with all tithes and pertinents. In the reign of Robert the
Bruce, the church was transferred to the abbot and monks of
Newbattle and this was confirmed by Landels, bishop of St Andrews in
1327. The church walls indicate that it was a modest building-80
feet by 18 feet-and today it is rewarding to see that ancient
edifice still standing.

THE EARLY 1700s CHURCH
In 1739, a new church was built which
served the parish until 1882. The simply-designed building was
white-washed and stood on the same site as the present edifice. No
fewer than 12 ministers gave service in this church. The Rev. George
Blackwell was the minister at its opening and the Rev. William
Bennie was ministering in the parish when the building was taken
down in 1882. Bennie became the first minister of the present
church.
